Researchers at a university in Budapest studied why dogs tilt their heads when they hear sounds. They watched videos of 40 dogs learning the names of toys. Some dogs were good at it, called Gifted Word Learner (GWL) dogs, while others were not. The researchers found that GWL dogs tilted their heads 43% of the time when asked to get a toy, while other dogs did it only 2% of the time. This suggests that GWL dogs understand the words and what they mean. The head tilt shows they are thinking about it. The study says normal dogs may still tilt their heads in other situations, just not when their owner asks for a toy by name. Interestingly, each dog preferred tilting its head to one side.
