Nelson Mandela was a hero. He fought against bad laws in South Africa. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. He went to university but had to leave because he protested. Then he studied law in Soweto and started a Black law firm. He joined the ANC to help Black people.

Before 1948, Black people had few rights. Everything was separated for whites and Blacks. Mandela said no to this. In 1962, he went to Ethiopia to learn to fight. But he got in trouble and went to prison for life in 1964. Many people supported him, and he got out in 1990.

For four years, Mandela and President de Klerk worked to end bad laws. In 1994, Mandela became president. He died on December 5, 2013, at 95.
